Nota editoriale – Italiano

Editorial note – English

This publication marks a methodological turning point in the literature of Aquawareness. The 22 filmed experiences analysed here are not new: they were already present in the 2022 manifesto Aquawareness – primum vivere. What changes radically is the perspective with which they are offered to the reader.

After the first, strongly evocative and philosophical presentation, this text invites a return to the same clips with a different attitude: more detached, more rigorous, more scientific in the original sense of the term. The aim is no longer merely to “feel” or to be inspired, but to observe the essential phenomena, to record what the water does when the immersed body performs any action, and to build knowledge from that direct observation.

In this sense, the article does not introduce new experimental content; it redefines the way of observing it. It marks the shift from the mythopoietic and introductory phase of the discipline to the phase of disciplined observation and theoretical formalisation of Basic Swimming and dual awareness.

Abstract – Italiano

  1. passività assoluta e fiducia nella spinta idrostatica (Raising, Levitation, Bouncing balls, Suspension lift, Lulling float);
  2. smascheramento delle abitudini motorie terrestri inefficaci;
  3. infinite forme di galleggiamento confortevole;
  4. correzione minima e controllo sottile;
  5. discesa intenzionale mediante il respiro;

  • passività come porta d’ingresso;
  • auto‑vincolo come metodo archeologico;
  • respiro come primo attuatore intenzionale;
  • testa come organo di guida primaria;
  • osservazione nuda e rigorosamente scientifica;
  • comfort come metro di verità;

Abstract – English

This article inaugurates a systematic and in‑depth analysis of the 22 video clips contained in Giancarlo De Leo’s 2022 manifesto Aquawareness – primum vivere. Through examination of original footage from Italian Swimming Federation (FIN) lessons recorded between 1992 and 2022, the text proposes a more mature, more articulated, and more theoretically grounded definition of Basic Swimming within the Aquawareness paradigm.

Contrary to the traditional approach, which focuses on the acquisition of conventional swimming techniques aimed at performance, speed or distance, Basic Swimming is here redefined as the conscious, non‑competitive rediscovery of the original relationship between the human body and the fluid medium.

It is a practice of somatic awareness in a liquid environment whose purpose is not “to swim well”, but to feel at home in the water, just as before birth.

The analysis identifies a thematic sequence articulated in six progressive phases:

  1. absolute passivity and trust in hydrostatic thrust (Raising, Levitation, Bouncing balls, Suspension lift, Lulling float);
  2. unmasking of ineffective terrestrial motor habits;
  3. infinite forms of comfortable floating;
  4. minimal correction and subtle control;
  5. intentional descent through the breath;
  6. discovery of the head as the primary guiding organ (head‑driven).

On this basis, seven foundational pillars are formulated:

  • passivity as the gateway;
  • self‑constraint as archaeological method;
  • breath as the first intentional actuator;
  • the head as the primary guiding organ;
  • bare, rigorously scientific observation;
  • comfort as the criterion of truth;
  • non‑performance and non‑competition.

At the core of the entire proposal lies the concept of dual awareness: the simultaneous and inseparable awareness of one’s own body in the water and of the water through the body.

The text thus offers a theoretical and methodological contribution to understanding swimming as a practice of somatic awareness and as an essential tool for safety, freedom and survival in the aquatic environment.

Keywords: Aquawareness, Basic Swimming, dual awareness, somatic awareness, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, mindful swimming, passivity, head-driven.

introduction and overview

di Giancarlo De Leo,
31 Gennaio 2026

Aquawareness – primum vivere (21 giugno 2022)

Aquawareness – primum vivere (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18898839)

Commento generale sui 22 video

Senti. Percepisci. Osserva.”

Fase 2 – Smascheramento delle abitudini terrestri inefficaci (Bad runner → Bad biker → Vertical kicking) → “Quello che funziona a terra è ridicolo in acqua. Senti lo spreco.”

Fase 3 – Forme passive/statiche di galleggiamento simmetriche, asimmetriche e confortevoli (Outrigger and ball → Static & simmetric → The fin → Asana → Sofa relax → Double outrigger) → “Esistono infinite posizioni di riposo.

Basic Swimming in the Context of Aquawareness (#0)

An analysis of the embedded video clips from the 2022 Aquawareness manifesto

by Giancarlo De Leo

31 January 2026

To clarify more precisely the concept of “Basic Swimming”, this article inaugurates a detailed examination of the 22 short video clips contained in the Aquawareness manifesto written by Giancarlo De Leo in 2022.
The manifesto was originally published in two parts on Ocean4future.org:
Aquawareness: swimming as a tool for awareness (1 March 2022)
Aquawareness: the search for awareness in swimming (8 March 2022)
It was later republished in a single, expanded version on Fuorimag.it:
Aquawareness – primum vivere (21 June 2022)
A stable open-access version is archived on Zenodo:
Aquawareness – primum vivere (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18898839)
An English version is available on the official Aquawareness website:
Aquawareness (13 October 2024)
We will examine the clips one by one — from the first “Raising” to the final “Lulling float”, including the entire head-driven family (Periscope → Head drives → Spinning & tilting #1 and #2) — in order to take stock and offer both a general commentary and a clearer, more mature definition of what “Basic Swimming” truly means within the Aquawareness paradigm, and of how dual awareness inseparably unites the two concepts.
General commentary on the 22 videos
These short films do not present “exercises” in the conventional sense. They are not intended to teach a technique for swimming faster, farther or more elegantly. They are experiences in which awareness — both of one’s own body in the water and of the water perceived through one’s own body — is the key to understanding their meaning.
These experiences function as snapshots, both subjective and objective, of real physical phenomena — the “naked and raw facts”, as De Leo calls them — that help the practitioner develop a dual, direct and immediate awareness of the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic laws governing the body when partially or totally immersed.
Approximate thematic sequence that emerges:

Phase 1 – Absolute passivity and trust in hydrostatic thrust
(Raising → Levitation → Bouncing balls → Suspension lift → Lulling float)
→ “Let the water do everything. You must do nothing. Feel. Perceive. Observe.”

Phase 2 – Unmasking of ineffective terrestrial habits
(Bad runner → Bad biker → Vertical kicking)
→ “What works on land is ridiculous in water. Feel the waste.”

Phase 3 – Passive/static forms of symmetrical, asymmetrical and comfortable floating
(Outrigger and ball → Static & symmetric → The fin → Asana → Sofa relax → Double outrigger)
→ “There exist infinite resting positions. Find yours.”

Phase 4 – Minimal correction and subtle control
(Stitching down → Integral braking → Periscope)
→ “When correction is needed, do it with the bare minimum and with awareness.”

Phase 5 – Intentional descent and mastery of the breath
(Starfish #1)
→ “You can choose to go down. Just exhale. No fear.”

Phase 6 – The head as main driver (heart of the revolution)
(Floating pin → Head drives #1 → Spinning and tilting #1 & #2)
→ “When the limbs are constrained, it emerges that the most effective rudder is your head. Discover the hidden degrees of freedom of the neck-shoulders.”

In the light of these videos, “Basic Swimming” is no longer “learning to swim” in the conventional sense (freestyle technique, bilateral breathing, turns, etc.). It is rather:
Basic Swimming = the conscious, non-competitive rediscovery of the original relationship between the human body and the fluid medium, through objective observation and embodied experiment of the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic laws that govern it.

In short, Basic Swimming in Aquawareness is a conscious return to the original aquatic condition of the human body — not the acquisition of new motor skills, but an unlearning of terrestrial habits and the rediscovery of a fluid, relaxed and intentional relationship with water, using the immersed body as a living laboratory. Ultimately it is a practice of somatic awareness in a fluid environment whose purpose is not “to swim well”, but to feel at home in the water, just as before birth.
The entire sequence constitutes a reverse archaeological journey: it begins from the bottom (absolute passivity, pure attention, primordial trust) and gradually ascends toward lucid intentionality (clear vision), while always preserving the cardinal principle: reduce voluntary action to the minimum in order to maximise perception and understanding of the water’s response, so as to interact with it in the best possible way.

A more complete definition of “Basic Swimming” in Aquawareness

It can be articulated in the following pillars:

Passivity as the gateway
Before any “doing”, there is the “letting be done”. Trust in hydrostatic thrust (Archimedes) is the non-negotiable foundation.

Self-constraint as archaeological method
Constraining the limbs (physically or by voluntary attention) is the principal tool for isolating and revealing the often unsuspected degrees of freedom of the cephalic-cervical-scapular sector — the principal natural rudder in water.

Breath as the first intentional actuator
The inspiratory/expiratory cycle is the bridge between involuntary passivity and voluntary action: it permits controlled descent (Starfish), cradling rocking (Lulling float), and modulation of buoyancy without the use of the limbs.

Head as primary guiding organ
When the limbs are excluded, it becomes evident that direction, rotation, inclination, spin and tilt arise from the movement of the head-neck-shoulders. This completely overturns the terrestrial paradigm.

Naked, raw and rigorously scientific observation
One does not judge “good/bad”, “fast/slow”, “beautiful/ugly”. One records only: “What does the water do when I do X?” The videos are deliberately made to be observed without emotional or aesthetic commentary.

Comfort as the criterion of truth
A position, a movement or a correction is “correct” only if it is effortless and comfortable for the body in that moment. Hence the infinite resting positions (sofa, fin, asana, double outrigger…). Note that “maximum comfort” in water can be synonymous with maximisation of survival capacity in extreme conditions, where it is vital to conserve every scrap of energy.

Non-performance, non-competition
There is no distance to cover, no time to beat, no style to perfect. There is only the present dialogue between body and water. For this dialogue it is necessary to pay the utmost attention, at the same instant, to the signals — even the faintest — that come from within (our body) and from without (the water). This is precisely the definition of dual awareness.

The videos presented are largely original recordings from the practical lessons of the C.R.L. FIN instructor courses, held from 1992 to 2022 and taught by Giancarlo De Leo, documenting the live research process as it unfolded. They are therefore not reconstructions or ex‑post or contemporary demonstrations, but a direct testimony of the identification and a possible definition of “Basic Swimming”.
